How can biochar help us solve environmental issues of the future?

Biochar is characterized by a very porous surface that can hold important nutrients so that these are not washed out of the soil. It also binds heavy metals and organic pollutants so that they are not absorbed by vegetables or crops grown there.

Furthermore, biochar has become more and more recognized as an important carbon sink. Carbon is trapped in the soil through biochar for hundreds of years, and each tonne of biochar corresponds to a reduction of around three tonnes of CO2 equivalent from the atmosphere.

Sirevaag Biokraftvarme AS is working to develop a cogeneration system, where biochar is a by-product of energy production, and will be of great environmental value!
